How to Work with Someone You Dislike

As hard as you may try to coexist peacefully with everyone in your office, odds are high that there will be at least one person you butt heads with. Whether it’s an overt clashing, or more of a silent distaste, whatever your unique scenario may be, not getting along with a coworker, especially if they’re on you’re immediate team is tough.

So what can you do?

Regardless of your like or dislike for immediate teammates, the one thing you cannot let happen is have external issues affect your output and quality of work. Of course that’s easier said than done, but here are a few actionable strategies to help you work amicably with even your least-favorite coworkers.

Find common grounds for celebration

Was there one project you worked on together where you actually saw eye to eye? Did you participate in a particularly exciting brainstorming session together? Did you hit a big goals while working on the same team? Think back to those times often, and, if you’re feeling especially magnanimous, attempt to reminisce together. Reliving shared wins and successes can help inject some positivity into your relationship.

Divide and conquer

Is your workplace foe more of an analytics whiz, while your speciality is team communication? You should always play to your strengths in your work, and attempting to work peacefully with a prickly coworker is no exception. Chances are, you don’t have the exact skill set (if you do, see the next section), so leverage that in assigning team roles. If you play your cards right, you may be able to drastically reduce your active collaboration time.

Find a middle man or woman
Even if you’re forced to work directly with someone who can’t stand, there’s no reason you can’t strategically bring a third-party into the situation as a buffer. The project lead should never be too far away. If that’s you (way to go, by the way!), a colleague, intern, or your immediate boss are all viable candidates to help give you a little space.

Be nice

Above all else, be positive. Even if you are working with someone you actually can’t stand, being openly negative will only devolve the situation. Keep a level head, come prepared, be proactive, and when all else fails, force a smile. It may actually help improve your mood!
